Understanding FTTC and SOGEA Broadband: Key Differences Explained

When choosing broadband for your business, your local exchange determines what’s available to you. Where full fibre, FTTP, hasn’t reached your exchange yet, there are two popular alternatives: FTTC (Fibre to the Cabinet) and SOGEA (Single Order Generic Ethernet Access). Both offer high speed internet of up to 80Mbps, but they aren’t the same product, and it’s worth knowing the difference before you choose.

FTTC (Fibre to the Cabinet)

FTTC delivers internet by running fibre optic cables to a street cabinet near your premises, with the final connection to your office made via a copper telephone line.

  • Phone Line Required: FTTC requires an active phone line, which means paying for line rental alongside your broadband.
  • Speed: Offers download speeds up to 80 Mbps, depending on the distance from the cabinet.
  • Voice Services: Includes a traditional phone line, allowing you to use standard telephone services alongside your internet.

SOGEA (Single Order Generic Ethernet Access)

SOGEA uses the same fibre and copper infrastructure as FTTC, but removes the need for a traditional phone number entirely.

  • No Phone Line Required: SOGEA provides broadband on its own, with no line rental to pay for separately.
  • Greater Stability: Because it doesn't rely on a traditional copper phone line, SOGEA offers a more reliable connection with a lower risk of downtime from line faults.
  • Built for VoIP: With strong bandwidth and speed, SOGEA is a solid alternative to PSTN for any business already using, or planning to use, a VoIP phone system

SOGEA and FTTC both run over the copper wires between your premises and the street cabinet, and both offer speeds of up to 80Mbps. The difference is stability: SOGEA’s lower risk of downtime makes it the better everyday choice for most businesses, particularly anywhere calls are handled over VoIP rather than a traditional line.

The 2027 Switch Off Affects More Than Your Phones

Openreach is retiring the UK’s old copper phone network, with every PSTN and ISDN line switched off by 31 January 2027. If your broadband is currently bundled with a traditional phone line, you’ll need a standalone connection like SOGEA in place before then. Our PSTN switch off guide covers exactly what to check and when, or talk to our team and we’ll look at what’s available at your exchange.

FTTC and SOGEA broadband setup for UK businesses

Why is SoGEA a better service than FTTC?

SoGEA and FTTC services utilise the copper wires going from your premises to the cabinet in the street and both offer great speeds of up to 80Mbps. However SoGEA offers greater stability because it doesn't use traditional copper-based phone lines. SoGEA lines boast a more reliable connection with a much lower risk of downtime due to faults. With a higher than average bandwidth and superior speeds SoGEA is the perfect alternative to PSTN for any business.
